The Anderton Boat Lift - Writing by Sam Lashbrooke

The truly amazing Anderton Boat Lift located in Cheshire, is one of the greatest reminders of Britain's canal mania age. The Anderton Boat Lift, also known as the "Cathedral of the Canals" was built in 1875 and was the world's first lift of it's kind! The lift was built to transfer boats from the River Weaver to the Trent & Mersey Canal.

The lift continued operating till 1983 when it was then closed due to serious deterioration of the structure.

After just sitting there for years, rusting away, around 7Million pounds was raised to fund the restoration of the lift and in 2002 it was re-opened followed by the opening of the Operations Centre in 2003 which hosts displays about the lift and how it works, a great gift shop, a café and an area where you can look into the room where the lift is controlled from!

As well as going on a trip boat on the lift, visitors can also opt to go on a 30-40 minute boat trip along to the Northwich Town Swing Bridge on the River Weaver.
