-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- Crick Report 2006, by Rose After
having a few nice days, I really did think we were in with a chance on
the Saturday of the Crick weekend. It was chance really that we
chose Saturday, it was mainly as we were going with friends, and all of
us had other things we wanted to do that weekend, so Saturday had been a longstanding arrangement.
![]() “Sods law” they call it, yes - Saturday turned out to be the wettest of the three that we’d chosen to go. In anticipation of a glorious sunny day, I went in a fleece. “why” I asked myself later…. It was WET for goodness sake. We got there at around 10am. Traffic was surprisingly slow up to crick village. I’m not too sure why. Once there, and on the field where you park, it was evident that today was going to be muddy. One difference this year seemed to be that more people were queuing for tickets to get in. There was the usual “fast lane” for pre paid tickets, but I wondered whether the fact that this year there was no discount for early booking, had stopped people actually bothering. It took a good half hour to get in the place, which we’d never done before. ![]() As we stood waiting the first spots of rain fell. They then carried on , and on, and on for the whole day. I ended up buying a waterproof jacket, ( yes I suppose I did need one) and the other half got a new hat. But it was very uncomfortable going round. There was the usual plastic decking stuff down, but very very muddy in places, and several stalls had hardboard sheets down which were lethal in the wet. My trousers were wet up to the knees. In all, the stalls were good. I felt there was more in the tents section up by the hard standing boats. There were loads of water exhibits , but it was far too wet to be an attractive part of the show, unless you were specifically interested in new boats. Food was ok, but a lack of seating spoiled it really. In better weather I’d have sat on the floor by the entertainment, but no chance this year. It was a bit of a wash out. There were plenty of boats to see, thats if you could get round all the umbrellas. Sunday was a much better day, so no doubt those of you that went would have had a far dryer time. But Monday I think there was a fire nearby, that blocked all the traffic up for ages and for which the fire fighters pumped water out of the canal. In all a good day despite the rain, but not a cheap day out - £8 per adult to get in. ![]() We trudged round a good few hours, but once we were on our way back to the car, out comes the sun. Ironical isn’t it. One bright spot….. we did see Richard and Judy ( picture to the right) The pictures marked with the 'JustCanals' logo on this page were all taken by Rose. -~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- Rose is a member of the JustCanals.com site crew - she contributes by sending in articles and pictures.
