To make using the canals of Britain safe and enjoyable we advice you to follow the guidance that we have for you in this section.

The majority of boats on the canals of Britain have a tiller at the back which enables you to steer the boat! Steering with a tiller is really quite simple: pushing the tiller to the right will make the boat go left and vice versa.

Your boat turns on a point roughly half way along the boat - like a pivot. This means you need to watch out for the front and the back. If you line up the front only and then try to turn into a narrow gap - a bridge or lock, for example - you risk hitting the side of the obstacle in question with the back of your boat.
