Jim Shead, popular waterways author who regularly contributes to Waterways World, told us what the UK canals mean to him.

"The canals (and rivers too) mean lots of things to me. They are a way to see our towns, cities and countryside from a unique perspective that can only be achieved by travelling by boat.

It is fresh air and exercise as well as heritage and tradition.

The waterways network also represents a community that is both confined to the navigations and spread across the UK from Llangollen to Cambridge and from Ripon to Godalming."
